It made sense to launch the station’s boats on either side of the privy at Virginia’s Windmill Point Lighthouse in this 1912 image. However the keepers had to make sure they guided the boats away from the privy, which was open to the water below. We can only wonder, if a keeper, not thinking, as he departed or arrived at the station going under the privy at a time when the “necessary” building was being used. The station was somewhat altered in appearance in 1921 to repair damage from storms. Established at the north entrance to Rappahannock River the lighthouse was automated in 1954 and demolished in 1965.
