Since all the waste when directly into the ocean, keeping an open window above the outhouse was not a problem at the Great Shoals Lighthouse. Built in 1884 at the entrance to the Wicomico River on the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland the lighthouse was demolished in 1966. It appears that this was a well-maintained station, but life on many remote screwpile lighthouses such as this could often be lonely for a keeper and any family members who might have lived there with the keeper.
