Helen Glidden’s classic book, The Light on the Island, has returned to print with a new 50th Anniversary Edition.

The book tells the touching story of a young girl growing up on Patos Island in the San Juan Archipelago. Her parents raised thirteen children while her father was the keeper of the Patos Island Lighthouse from 1905 to 1913. Helene reminisces about the adventure and heartbreak experienced on a beautiful but remote island where smugglers, pioneers and “God” weave in and out of their lives. Even President Teddy Roosevelt, a family friend, visits the island.

Born at the New Dungeness Lighthouses on the Strait of Juan de Fuca in 1900, she originally wrote this book for her children. Originally published back in 1951, it is one of the most sought after books by history, maritime and lighthouse buffs. Now with the 50th Anniversary edition, you won’t have to pay the big price a rare books brings, plus you’ll have the advantage of additional historical photos, which have been added, as well as four additional stories that were not in the first book.

This is a “must have” reading book for any one with an interest in lighthouses. The Light on the Island is available from Lighthouse Depot as item #91507 for $16.95 plus $5.95 shipping by calling 1-800-758-1444.

This story appeared in the June 2001 edition of Lighthouse Digest Magazine. The print edition contains more stories than our internet edition, and each story generally contains more photographs - often many more - in the print edition.
