On Friday, May 25, 2001, Petty Officer Pedro Gonzales become the 69th keeper of Light Station Boston at a Change of Watch Ceremony officiated by Commander Susan Bibeau, Deputy Chief of Group Boston, with Master of Ceremony, Auxiliarist Sally Snowman.

Sam, the official lighthouse dog was witness to the event along with many Coast Guard active duty, reservists, Auxiliarists, National Park Rangers, members of the Friends of the Boston Harbor Islands, and representatives from the American Lighthouse Foundation. The 68th keeper, Petty Officer Richard Himelrick, relinquished the helm with sincere emotion as his two years of service as Supervisor of Little Brewster Island came to an end. PO Gonzales’ billet has been increased to four years to facilitate continuity with the Boston Harbor National Park partnership.
