The headline is the title of a new book compiled with the artwork of David Liverett and written by ninety different writers. That in itself is amazing and one of the things that makes this book stand out among others.

The whole thing started in 1998 as a celebration of thirty years of marriage beginning a two a half-year trek to the completion of the book When Hope Shines Through. David and his wife Avis traveled to Prince Edward Island and drove as far south as Martha’s Vineyard, visiting and photographing lighthouses. He then started sketching his favorites and came up with the idea of publishing greeting cards. After a little success, and much trial and error, a book seemed more practical. Developing a book would mean more lighthouse hunting to obtain photographs from which to draw, Soon trips to Oregon, Michigan, Florida and Wisconsin took place and some friends furnished others.

David’s strengths lie in drawing images and not in writing. He had worked with Christine Smith Stephens on the book Oh, to be in Miss Collier’s class again! and he had expected Christine to write for his new book. After much thought, Christine chose not to be the sole writer for the book. She had completed sixteen pieces and would contribute those. David then planned to add scripture texts and hymn lyrics that would speak of hope.

A Sunday sermon on hope changed that. David began thinking of all the writers he knew and figured if he could get one hundred people to write three hundred words each, he would have the needed manuscript.

Well, he didn’t get 100 writers but the completed work is the text of ninety writers, an amazing feat in itself.

T. Franklin Miller, former president of Warner Press wrote of the book, “We who read this book owe David Liverett an un-payable debt for his skillful and artistic display of the lighthouses we so desperately need. Read and rejoice!”

Norma Brandon, CBH/Mass Media Coordinator, wrote of the book, “ I feel the warmth of bright hope as I read the inspiring, personal meditations and realized the investment of time in the beautiful lighthouses.”

James Earl Massey, former Dean of Anderson School of Theology, wrote of the book, “Choice words can be coupled with apt music to create memorable song. In like manner, strategic statements can be wedded to illustrative art to produce revealing literature. That has happened in this book by David Liverett, the message of which is clear, centered, well illustrated and compelling.
