This past June, California’s newest lighthouse was dedicated as the Walton Lighthouse became official.
Several hundred people ventured out on the west jetty at Santa Cruz Harbor for the dedication of the 42-foot tall lighthouse that has now become an official aid to navigation.
Charles Walton, a local sailor, donated $100,000 toward the building of the lighthouse, which now bears his name. A memorial plaque at the lighthouse contains a long list of others who donated toward the project, with many giving $10,000.
Although we think it was a great idea to build this lighthouse, we also believe the money spent here could have been used to save some of our nation’s historic lighthouses that are in danger of being lost forever.
