During the last week of October, surprising many customers, New England’s “First Lady of Light,” Connie Small, stopped by Lighthouse Depot in Wells, Maine to chat about lighthouses.

As soon as the customers realized who she was, the crowd’s son gathered around her with requests to autograph her book, The Lighthouse Keeper’s Wife. During the couple of hours of her visit, Connie autographed more books than most authors do in a month. This in itself is amazing, since Connie is 101 years old. She has given close to 580 lectures on lighthouses, with the most recent one just several weeks before her visit to Lighthouse Depot.

Connie is shown here with Tim Harrison, editor of Lighthouse Digest Magazine, holding a copy of The Golden Age of American Lighthouses by Tim Harrison and Ray Jones. Harrison is holding a copy of Connie’s book. Photograph by Kathleen Finnegan.
