Lightkeeper Seeks Wife

Comments?

That’s what the headline read in the May 11, 1910 edition of the Washington Post.

It seems that the assistant keeper of Long Island’s Fire Island Lighthouse, Hans Anderson advertised in a German-American newspaper for a wife. The ad stated that the women must be, “middle aged and one who has worked for her living, so that she will be satisfied to settle down to the quiet life on the beach, where her work will be light and her responsibilities few.”

According to the story, Anderson received 25 replies and had narrowed it down to two candidates.

If any of our readers can tell us if he actually married one of those two finalists, we’d love to know the rest of the story. You can email our editor at Timh@lhdigest.com or write to Editor, Lighthouse Digest, P.O. Box 250, East Machias, ME 04630.

This story appeared in the November 2003 edition of Lighthouse Digest Magazine. The print edition contains more stories than our internet edition, and each story generally contains more photographs - often many more - in the print edition.
