Connecticut’s Avery Point Lighthouse has received a $100,000 government grant from the Save America’s Treasures program, which was approved by the House of Representatives. Although the funding still requires the approval of the U.S. Senate, which is expected to happen, this puts the funding requirements close to the completion of the restoration.
When the Avery Point Lighthouse Society started the planning for the restoration of the only lighthouse built as a memorial to lighthouse keepers, the project needed $175,000. Proving that the longer it takes to raise money, the more expensive the restoration is proven by the fact that the costs have now jumped to over $350,000.
Workers have already been working over two months on the restoration project which received a bonus recently from the Cape Cod Chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation in the amount of $25.000.00 from the overnight stays program at Cape Cod’s Race Point Lighthouse.
