South Carolina’s Hunting Island Lighthouse, which has been closed due to cracked stairs, may not reopen to the public until 2004. Even though only a small number of the 175 stairs to the top were cracked, state officials have decided to build supports for all of them. If the project costs under $200,000 the state has the money. However, if the cost goes over $200,000 park officials will need to seek grants and donations.

The 133-foot-tall lighthouse in Beaufort was built in 1875 to replace an earlier tower that was destroyed in the Civil War.

Where are the lost photos?

In 1898, erosion forced government officials to move the lighthouse one mile inland to its current location. But, where are the photographs of the move? The camera was around for quite some time by the late 1800’s and surely a number of people would have taken a number of photographs of such an historic event. If you can help us locate photos of the move, we’d be sure to publish them. How many Lighthouse Digest readers are amateur detectives? Whatever you find send it to Editor, Lighthouse Digest, P.O.
