Shown here is Joaquim Furtado, a Water Tender who served on board the LV 9 Nantucket Lightship from 1893 to 1898.
What is unusual is the cap device shown on his hat. This style hat device was used up until 1910 when George Putnam, Commissioner of lighthouses instituted the new rules and regulations for a more standard uniform for the U.S. Lighthouse Service.
The type of hat device shown here was used instead of adding stripes or insignias to the persons uniform to identify the rank of the crewmen.
