This old news service photograph dated December 18, 1934, was recently acquired for the archives of the American Lighthouse Foundation’s Museum of Lighthouse History.
The caption with the photo reads: Viscount Elmley, M.P. for East Norfolk, England., lives in a very comfortable
lighthouse, which stands on the coast in his constituency. His novel home is Winterton Lighthouse, just four miles from Yarmouth and inside it is difficult to believe that it was once a lighthouse. Lord Elmley is shown here rolling the lawn in front of his old lighthouse home. Gardening is his favorite hobby.
The 70-foot tall Winterton Lighthouse was built in 1867 and was discontinued in 1921. We don’t know much about Lord Elmley or the lighthouse and hope some of our readers will supply us with additional information.
