The site of the former Trayser Museum in old Custom House on Rt. 6A in Barnstable, Massachusetts, is the home of the new Coast Guard Heritage Museum.
In dedicating the new museum, Rear Admiral Pekoske, commander of the First Coast Guard District, called the location a spot most appropriate to the Coast Guard’s roots.
The former Trayser Museum closed its doors in March 2004 because of lack of funding and support from the community. Former members of the Trayser Museum, with the help of locals Lou Cataldo and Joseph Dugus, raised $50,000 to re-establish the museum as a Coast Guard Heritage Museum.
Unfortunately, some politicians used the dedication ceremony as an opportunity to drum up support against the recent base closings. The tactic was inappropriate and took away from the dignity of the ceremony.
