Shown here is the gravestone of William Dennis at

the Common Ground Cemetery in Newport, Rhode Island, just a couple of hundred feet from the grave of

Ida Lewis, the famous keeper of the Lime Rock Lighthouse.

William Dennis (1750-1843) was the first keeper of Rhode Island’s Dutch Island Lighthouse. He was the captain of privateering vessels in the American Revolution and was the sheriff of Newport County, Rhode Island from 1801 to 1813. He served as the keeper at the lighthouse from 1827 until shortly before his death at 93 years of age.

Unfortunately, time has obliterated the inscription at the bottom of the tombstone.
