Government Sells Four Lighthouses

Newport News Middle Ground Lighthouse was sold at ...

After no other government agencies, local communities or nonprofits stepped forward to apply for ownership of four lighthouses in the Chesapeake Bay of Virginia that had been offered for adoption under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act, they were sold at auction to private individuals.

Smith Point Lighthouse was sold at auction for ...

Peter Jurewicz of Smithfield, VA who stated that he’s not sure what he will do with it, purchased the Thimble Shoal Lighthouse for $65,000. On the other hand, Robert Gonsoulin of Williamsburg, VA, who bought the Newport News Middle Ground Lighthouse for $31,000, says he will use it for a family retreat while Nick Korstad of North Plains, OR, who purchased the Wolf Trap Lighthouse for $75,000, says he will use the lighthouse as a tourist attraction.

So far, no information is known about what David McNally plans do with Smith Point Lighthouse which he purchased for $170,000. However, it is important to remember that all of these lighthouses will need bags of money to restore them.
