Recently, volunteers of the St. George Lighthouse Association recovered by hand an estimated 1.5 tons of loose brick from the ruins of Florida's Cape St. George Lighthouse.
Located on Little St. George Island in the Gulf of Mexico, the lighthouse collapsed as a direct result of last year’s devastating hurricanes.
The ruins of the lighthouse had collected sand, partially covering many of the bricks, making recovery even more difficult. In fact, the lantern room is mostly covered by sand.
The group has taken the recovered bricks and placed them in a donated storage area. They are also trying to raise money to cover the cost of recovering the large pieces, which can eventually be used to rebuild the lighthouse. To learn more or make a donation, you can contact the group at 201 Bradford Street, St. George Island, Florida 32328 or email dbarnell@gtcom.net.
