After the second and third grade students at California's Grover Heights Elementary School were featured in the May issue of Lighthouse Digest about their Pennies for Piedras Campaign, they had a visit from Mike Pool, Diane Simpson, and Michael Ayers from the Sacramento office and John Bogacki and Charna Lefton from the Bakersfield office of the Bureau of Land Management.
Next they had a visit from Representative Lois Capps who came to thank them for having written a letter in support of H.R. 3534, a bill she is sponsoring that would, if passed, make Piedras Blancas Light Station a natural area.
Shown here with the class is, their teacher, Libby Anderson, top row left with Representative Capps in the top row second from the left and John Bogacki, BLM park manager at Piedras Blancas Light Station in the top row right.
On the table along with their lighthouse projects was $181.00 in rolled pennies. The students ended the school year with $1,337.30 in pennies raised for the lighthouse. Naturally, the students will start the program again when school begins on August 21st. The students say they want to make a difference and are adamant about replacing the missing lantern room of the lighthouse and are willing to make it happen, “One penny at a time.”
