The government has again announced a number of lighthouses that have been declared excess property and will be given to a qualified application. Qualified applicants that wish to apply for ownership under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act (NHLPA) include other state, federal or local government entities or legitimate nonprofits.
Three lighthouses in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay are included on the list, namely: Sharps Island, Hooper Strait, and Point No Point. Also being excessed is the 1877 Stepping Stones Lighthouse, which is located near Kings Point New York in Western Long Island Sound and that state's Oswego West Pierhead Lighthouse, which is located on Lake Ontario.
New owners will be required to maintain the structures according to the Secretary of Interiors Standards for Rehabilitation.
