The Friends of Rock Island (FORI) have announced plans to restore the Pottawatomie Lighthouse found in a beautiful Wisconsin State Park off the tip of Door County in Lake Michigan.

The first phase of their five year project is the reconstruction of the lantern room which was removed by the Coast Guard years ago.

Pottawatomie Lighthouse, the first government lighthouse on Lake Michigan, was built in 1836 and rebuilt in 1858. It was a manned station until 1945 when it became automated.

FORI hope to open the lighthouse for tours by 2002.

The group currently needs to raise $14,000 for their restoration work and is appealing for tax deductible donations. If you are interested in helping them, your donation can be sent to Friends of Rock Island, 126 Country Club Drive, Clintonville, WI 54929.
