New York’s Long Island Lighthouse Challenge will be held next month on May 17 and 18, but the wonderful memories of last year’s Long Island Lighthouse Challenge are as fresh as ever in the mind of Christine Morton.
Christine says she has loved lighthouses all her life and participating in last year’s Long Island event, along with fiancé John, was truly an experience she will always remember.
She had hoped for a bright sunny day for the Challenge, but Mother Nature had other ideas with the morning starting out being 47 degrees, overcast, foggy and drizzly. However, weather is never a factor with people that love lighthouses and off they went to visit eight of the Long Island’s lighthouses and the East End Seaport Museum within the two-day time frame.
As the day progressed the temperature eventually reached 58 degrees and the rain stopped, although the sky with its eerie appearance was threatening a downpour.
They visited Montauk Lighthouse, Fire Island Lighthouse, Huntington Harbor Lighthouse, Eaton’s Neck Lighthouse, Horton’s Point Lighthouse by car and a boat cruise to other offshore lighthouses. She said the cruise out to Plum Island and the Cedar Point Lighthouse was fantastic and volunteers, such as Nancy Bahnsend made everyone on board, including them, feel like family. Another highlight of the cruise was listening to Bob Allen telling stories of life at Cedar Point Lighthouse of his great grandfather, his father and himself as a child.
Although Christine said they had hoped to see all the lighthouses in one day, the last one had to wait until the following day. This time, Mother Nature provided them with a brisk and sunny day as they arrived at Horton’s Point Lighthouse early in the morning where they were delighted to find out they were the first ones to complete the Challenge at this location. Here they received an unbelievably warm welcome from the lady in charge and they were given a special tour of the museum and lighthouse.
Christine said she had a wonderful time and they met some great people and hopefully created some new friendships. This year’s Long Island Island Lighthouse Challenge is just days away and Christine said she’d recommend the event to anyone.
