The first phase of the construction to protect the historic Morris Island Lighthouse in Charleston Harbor off Folly Beach, South Carolina is now complete.
Although the light was discontinued in the 1960s, for all practical purposes, the 1876 tower was abandoned in 1948 when erosion washed away the island causing the tower to be surrounded by water. The keeper’s house no longer stands.
The cofferdam that has now been built around the tower will keep the water from lapping at the lighthouse so that repairs can next be done to the foundation to prevent the tower from toppling or simply collapsing.
