A lack of money and other legal problems has threatened the closure of the surfing museum housed at the Santa Cruz Lighthouse in Santa Cruz, California.
It seems that the city of Santa Cruz, facing extreme budget shortfalls decided to close and stop funding the museum unless some money could be raised. This prompted a group of old friends and surfing buddies to form the Santa Cruz Surf Club Preservation Society to save the museum.
The Santa Cruz Lighthouse was built in 1967 as a memorial to honor the memory of Mark Abbott who drowned in 1965 while surfing. It replaced a lost lighthouse that once stood nearby that was demolished in 1941. At publication time the group had raised $4,000, which is short of what the city wants them to raise, but they are confident they will raise the necessary finds to keep the museum open.
