According to news accounts the West Vancouver Historical Society’s Point Atkinson Light Station subcommittee claims that Canada’s Point Atkinson Lighthouse Station will fall into ruins in the near future if something is not done soon to save the station.

Although some care has been given to the lighthouse tower itself, the lighthouse group said the buildings, some which still contain historical artifacts are in imminent danger. A grant has been applied for to review the facility to generate a report detailing the steps that would be needed to convert the site into a tourist facility.

It seems to this editor that the locals need to take control of their lighthouse away from government control and start the restoration with volunteers before it is either too late or even too expensive to restore it. Once it’s restored; then work to get the tourists there, not the other way around. Remember the words from the heartwarming film “Field of Dreams,” “If you build it they will come.” The same is true of lighthouses, “Restore and promote it and they will come.”
