As we reported in October 2008, the historic United States Coast Guard station in Milwaukee, Wisconsin was deliberately demolished.
In 1987 the federal government turned over ownership of the station to Wisconsin's Milwaukee County. For the next 20 years the county government had ownership of the station that stood near the McKinley Marina, and regardless of what anyone says, they did not make a concerned effort to save the structure, which was demolished last year by the county with no apparent concern for historic preservation.
The fact that the 1916 structure was listed on the National Register of Historic Places did not offer the historic building any protection. Now, another slice of American history has been lost forever. When will we learn to stop putting our historic properties in the care of inept bureaucrats?
