England’s Orford Ness Lighthouse, threatened by severe and rapid erosion, appears to be on the brink of destruction and may soon be lost forever.
A light station was first established here in back in 1634. The current tower was built in 1792 and is on a former secret Ministry of Defense site, which is now a nature reserve managed by the National Trust. The lighthouse support buildings were all demolished in 1959.
Trinity House, which manages all lighthouses in England, states the lighthouse has about five years left, but other disagree; believing that one good winter storm later this year could topple the lighthouse.
