Although the big First Day Ceremony honoring the new Gulf Coast Lighthouse Postage Stamps took place at Mississippi’s Biloxi Lighthouse, Florida was not about to be left out for the historic event honoring one of its own lighthouses on a the new stamps.
Although they couldn’t hold an event at the Fort Jefferson Lighthouse, they were able to host an event at the Key West Post Office which is about 70 miles from the island lighthouse.
The Fort Jefferson Lighthouse is also known as the Tortugas Harbor Lighthouse and the Garden Key Lighthouse. It is located at historic Fort Jefferson, where Dr. Samuel Mudd was once held as a prisoner following President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Fort Jefferson is America’s largest 19th century coastal fort. The lighthouse has recently undergone some restoration thanks to money from the recent federal stimulus money.
The ceremonies held at the Key West Post Office were attended by a number of dignitaries and lighthouse officialdoms.
