Imperial Tower Still Lacks Funding

Comments?

The Nottawasaga Island Lighthouse located on an island in the approach to Collingwood Harbor, Georgian Bay, Lake Huron in Ontario Canada, remains a symbol of defiance as funding to restore and save the lighthouse have been stalled due to the economy.

Built in 1858 it is one of six Imperial Lighthouse Towers, a series of lighthouse built of limestone around the Bruce Peninsula.

Over $200,000 was spent in 2005 to stabilize the lighthouse, which has probably been struck by lighting more than any other lighthouse in North America. In the 2005 stabilization of the tower a lighting protection system was also installed, which may well be a primary reason the tower is still standing.

As much as the Canadian government officials say they want to save the tower, there simply is no money available at the present time for the estimated $4.5 million that it will cost to restore the tower.

We would like to locate old newspapers stories about the lighthouse, recoded memories of life at the lighthouse and photographs of the keepers and family members that lived at the lighthouse. If any of our readers can help, please email us at Editor@LighthouseDigest.com.
