Building of the Hirtshals Lighthouse started in 1860 and took three years to complete. The area was settled as a direct result of the construction of the lighthouse. The 155-foot tall lighthouse, located in northwestern Denmark on the North Sea, was constructed with red brick and then covered with Dutch tile.
Hirtshals, with a population of 6,600, is especially known for its fishing industry and tourism. It is home to the Norwegian ferry company Color Line, which brings thousands of Dutch, German, and Norwegian tourists to the area every year.
