At first glance this structure may look like a lighthouse in some remote part of the world. However, the building was actually the Armed Forces Radio and Television Outlet and Information Office at the Sondrestrom Air Base in Greenland as it appeared in 1953.
Former Coast Guard Lighthouse Keeper Tom Serres, who was stationed at the Holland Island Bar Lighthouse, took this photo after he arrived at the station on the Coast Guard Cutter Westwind in 1953. He later returned to the station as the Special Event Coordinator in 1963 when he was a staff sergeant in the Air Force.
