Minnesota’s Split Rock Lighthouse will be hosting a number of events throughout the year for the station’s 100th birthday.
One of the major kick-off events will be held on afternoon of May 1 at the History Center in St. Paul, Minnesota where the public can visit with costumed lighthouse keepers, explore displays, participate in craft activities and enjoy music.
Also, every Friday night at the lighthouse visitors can attend special programs with live music and guest speakers concluding with the lighting of the giant Fresnel lens.
In a normal year Split Rock Lighthouse greets over 120,000 visitors, a number that is expected to jump with this year’s celebration. The lighthouse station, built overlooking what has been described as one of the most dangerous sections of water in the world, was first lit in 1910 and is now totally restored.
