Massachusetts’s Thacher Island Association was recently honored when First Lady Michelle Obama designated it as one of the nation’s newest Preserve America Stewards.

In presenting the award, Mrs. Obama said, “I thank and commend the volunteers of the Thacher Island Association for protecting our nation’s historic treasures, both for your fellow citizens as well as visitors from near and far. You are a wonderful example for our young people who are the future stewards of our heritage.”

Designation as a Preserve America Steward provides the lighthouse with national recognition programs that successfully uses volunteers to help care for historic sites.

The Thacher Island Lighthouses are also known as ...

Thacher Island is the site of America’s last and only operating twin lighthouses. The restored station is open to the public for tours and overnight stays, are also available. Shown here are some images of their volunteers at work. The Thancher Island Association and its many volunteers are to be thanked and congratulated for making a difference at the Thacher Island Lighthouse Station. They have made a difference.
