Although being the only state to be bordered by rivers on three sides, and two gigantic lakes; Lake Cumberland and Kentucky Lake, nearly no one would think of Kentucky as a lighthouse state. In fact, most people would think of horses grazing in the bluegrass state and, of course, the world famous Kentucky Derby.
However, the very active Derby City Lighthouse Club in Louisville, Kentucky proves that you don’t have to live near lighthouses to love them.
The Derby City Lighthouse Club began in December of 1998 as a small group of people to share interest in preserving lighthouses. The group, which meets monthly, now has about 40 members who get together to share lighthouse trip experiences, lighthouse history, photographs and lighthouse collecting. They have even been visited by Bill Younger, the founder of Harbour Lights, the company that makes replica models of historic lighthouses.
The group enjoys a number of special activities throughout the year, including visiting lighthouses, an annual picnic with silent action, and other events that all help raise money for lighthouse preservation. They’ve donated money to lighthouses near and far, including Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse, all the way in northern Michigan.
Currently the group is assisting in the restoration of

By the way, Kentucky does have a small, but picturesque, lighthouse at Lighthouse Landing on Kentucky Lake.
