For a number of years North Carolina’s Bodie Island Lighthouse was on the Lighthouse Digest Doomsday List of endangered lighthouses. During that time
hardly a week would go by when we didn’t receive e-mails or letters from people who couldn’t believe the lighthouse was endangered. Some people wrote saying
they were just there, and the lighthouse looked great. But, as we have explained over the years, the Bodie Island Lighthouse may have looked great, but the lighthouse
had not received any major repairs since it was built in 1872. A National Park Service report, released a number of years ago, told of how the tower was unstable and
unsafe.
In the eyes of anyone who supports lighthouse preservation, the most exciting photographs of a lighthouse are those of a lighthouse undergoing restoration. So, if
you are planning a visit to the lighthouse in the near future, be sure to take lots of photographs, as you will be witnessing history in the making.
However, if you can’t make it to the famous Bodie Island Lighthouse, which rivals nearby Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in magnificence, enjoy these photos of a
lighthouse being saved.
