This outstanding mural of the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Lighthouse was recently painted by Sturgeon Bay artist Aaron Holland on the side of a local BP gas station in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.

Carl and Helen Marschner, who sent us this photograph, said that the photograph does not do the mural justice. They went on to say, “It is a beautiful, colorful addition to the downtown area and very realistic.” They should know; they live right across the street from the real thing.

Interestingly, shortly after the mural was painted, the City of Sturgeon Bay took up the issue of whether or not murals should be regulated. There always seems to be one or two people who want to try to spoil a good thing. One alderman, John Aldi, said, “It’s a nice picture, but is it what we want in our historic city? Personally, I would like us to not have any at all.” Apparently Mr. Aldi has not travelled around the United States visiting lighthouses. Many communities with lighthouses have wonderful murals depicting their historic lighthouses and other maritime scenes. Fortunately, the rest of the city’s Common Council did not agree with Mr. Aldi and voted not to regulate murals.

Whatever the case, we think the mural is outstanding, and we congratulate artist Aaron Holland for doing a magnificent job. Hopefully more of our readers will send us photographs of lighthouse murals from their communities.
