Old photographs always have a story to tell as does this original newspaper image taken on December 8, 1930 that recently came into our possession.
The caption with the photograph read, “Navigation is over and winter is at hand when the buoys that guide ships through the Detroit River Channels are brought to dry land. This ice-covered buoy, the largest on the Great Lakes, and weighing over nine tons, is shown being unloaded ashore.” Notice how the vessel is leaning as the buoy is being unloaded. Unfortunately, the caption did not tell us the name of U.S. Lighthouse Service Tender that was performing the task.
