The Cleveland Ledge Lighthouse in the waters of Buzzards Bay, about two miles off land, near Pocasset, Massachusetts has again been declared excess property under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act. The lighthouse was first declared excess in 2007. At that time only one applicant applied for the lighthouse. However, they later withdrew their application. So the lighthouse has been listed again. If a non profit does not apply for ownership the lighthouse will go up for auction.
The lighthouse, sitting in 21 feet of water, is the only one built by the Coast Guard in the First District. Completed in 1943, it was automated in 1978.
It will be interesting to see if any non profit group steps forward to apply for ownership, or if it will go on the auction block to someone with deep pockets.
