The folks at Ford Motor knew what they were doing when they picked out the location for this 1966 advertisement for the Lincoln Continental. Anyone who has been to Connecticut’s Stratford Point Lighthouse knows how spectacular the location is. However, if Ford were planning a similar photo shoot a few years later, in 1969, they would not have picked the same location.
In 1969, the Coast Guard did the unimaginable when they removed the lantern room from the lighthouse and replaced the light at the top of the tower with a DCB-224. Fortunately, the lantern room was saved and put on display at a local park. Finally, in 1990, 21 years later, the headless lighthouse was given back its dignity when the lantern room was replaced.
Although the classy and elite Lincoln Continental may sadly pass from the American scene, the Stratford Point Lighthouse still stands today. The keeper’s house is still used for family housing by the United States Coast Guard.
