In January 2010 vandals caused nearly $500,000 in damge to the lighthouse when they fired guns at the lighthouse and also damaged the grounds. The most extensive damage was done to the irreplaceable 1890 first order Fresnel lens. A $5,000 reward led to the arrest of two people.

Donations toward the restoration can be sent to Friends of Cape Meares Lighthouse, P.O. Box 262, Netarts, OR 97142. To learn more about the lighthouse we would suggest the book, Cape Meares and Its Sentinel, which is available for $14.95 plus $1.50 for shipping from Tillamook County Pioneer Museum, 2106 Second Street, Tillamook, OR 97141.
