The Portland 612 and Nantucket 112 Lightships and a Large Navigational Buoy (LNB) are shown above at the docks of the Boston Coast Guard Station on March 29, 1975. The Nantucket had been decommissioned the previous day. Both vessels are now privately owned.

Shown at left, Large Navigational Buoys (LNB) also referred to as Lighted Navigational Buoys replaced the lightships. They were much more economical to operate than lightships and did not require risking the lives of crews. However, many Coast Guardsmen said the LNBs were just as much a “target” for ships at sea.
