The restoration was done by International Chimney Corporation, a company that widely respected for its lighthouse restoration projects and involvement in the relocation moves of a number of lighthouse. A $170,700 grant from the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation (ECHDC) funded this final stage of the restoration so the lighthouse can again be opened to the public.

All the dignitaries present at the event spoke of the historical significance of the lighthouse and its restoration. But David Colligan of ECHDC probably summed it best when he stated, “This work is another step towards the realization of a waterfront for Buffalo in the 21st Century, one that is cognizant and respectful of the past, but with a degree of access that our region’s previous generations could only have dreamed of. ECHDC is proud to have contributed to this effort, and we salute the vision of Congressman Higgins and the hard work and dedication of the Buffalo Lighthouse Association.”

According to Thomas R. Johnston, president of the Buffalo Lighthouse Association, the next project for the group will be the restoration of the South Buffalo Lighthouse, which the group recently acquired.

To learn about another lighthouse in Buffalo, New York; the lost Buffalo Breakwater Lighthouse, we recommend the book Ghost Lights of Lake Erie that is available from Lighthouse Digest.
