Thanks to the tenacity of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation, Louisiana’s New Canal Lighthouse has been rebuilt after having been destroyed by double hits in 2005 from Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita.
The new structure, although looking the same in appearance as the previous structure, will be different. The new structure sits high up on pilings to protect it from water surges in future hurricanes.
In 2007, the severely damaged lighthouse was dismantled and put into storage so that some of the original material could be used in rebuilding the new structure.
In 2008, Carlton Dufrechou, executive director of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation said of the planning of the rebuilding, “This is like rebuilding the levee system. That light is part of metro New Orleans. It is much a part of the city as the streetcars. It has got to be rebuilt.”
Although the group was able to miraculously raise the immense amount of money to rebuild the lighthouse, they still need to raise money to build the entrance plaza, put in the personalized bricks that they sold, do the drive and decking all around and the landscaping with outside signage. To help complete the project donations can be made at www.saveourlake.org or by calling the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation at 504-836-2215.
