Butler Flats Lighthouse, which has sometimes been spelled as Butler’s Flat Lighthouse was automated in 1978 and subsequently leased to the City of New Bedford. Over the years, volunteers, as well as inmates of a local correctional facility, have done some work at the lighthouse. Operated as a private aid to navigation, it was relighted with a new optic on its 100th birthday on April 10, 1998. The lighthouse will soon have a new owner.

Nick Korstad, who owns Borden Flats Lighthouse in nearby Fall River, Massachusetts, went out with GSA on a recent inspection trip to the lighthouse and shared some photos with us and we are also publishing a couple of archival photos to show a “Yesteryear” and “Today” comparison.
