With war in Europe imminent, this March 1938 image titled “When the Foundation Goes, the Light is Doomed” was very appropriate, with civilization being threatened by the clouds of evil. Notice the large crack in the foundation of Freedom and Democracy, which is causing cracks in the lighthouse, which represents the church, and Civilization, represented by the ship, will crash on the rocks if the other three fail.
Is civilization as we know it again being threatened as it was then? Does history repeat itself? Images like this always have a story to tell, and people will probably offer several wide and varied interpretations of what they see, but, more than likely, they will all be similar.
