Shown here is the United States Lighthouse Service Lighthouse Tender Tulip when she was stranded in ice during the severe winter of February 1934, when Long Island Sound was frozen across from Lloyds Harbor to the Connecticut shore.
This was not the only time the vessel was in danger of being lost. She was literally blown and swept on to the shore and landed on some railroad tracks in the Great Hurricane of September 1938.
Built in 1907 the vessel came under control of the Coast Guard in 1939 and continued in service until 1945 when it was decommissioned. The vessel was sold to the government of the Philippines in 1947.
