Restoration work at Long Island New York’s famous Fire Island Lighthouse will keep the tower closed during the first part of this year’s summer months, but the rest of the historic site, including the museum, will remain open to the public.
The workman shown here, standing on the dome of the lantern room, nearly 170 feet above the ground, obviously has nerves of steel. Although the Fire Island Lighthouse site did suffer some damage from hurricane Sandy, the work being performed is part of scheduled restoration. The tower is expected to reopen to the public in August.
