Located east of the Straits of Mackinac, the 1927 Martin Reef Lighthouse is ready for a new owner. The Coast Guard has declared the lighthouse as excess property and, under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act, the General Services Administration is offering the lighthouse for free to any qualified nonprofit or other government entity. If none apply for ownership, the lighthouse will be sold at a public auction to the highest bidder. Can you imagine the possibilities? You can learn more about Martin Reef Lighthouse in the excellent 1995 book “Martin Reef Lightship to Lighthouse” by John J. Spellman that was published by the Les Cheneaux Historical Association in Cedarville, Michigan. (Photo by Bert W. Barrett.)
