Efforts are underway to preserve one of the screw-pile legs of Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse that once stood in Croatan Sound near Manteo, North Carolina.
The massive iron leg, which was dredged up by the Army Corps of Engineers about ten years ago, has been in storage at the Town of Manteo’s public works yard ever since. The lighthouse structure was destroyed in a storm as it was being moved from the site in the 1950s by its private owner who had purchased the lighthouse from the government.
Plans are being formulated as to how to best preserve the leg from deterioration and then display it with interpretative signage near the replica of the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse and the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Manteo, North Carolina.
