Because British Columbia’s Langara Point Lighthouse has the only rotating first order Fresnel lens in Canada, we have taken a slight 17-year step back in time to share these photos taken when noted lighthouse author and historian Chris Mills served there in 1996 as a relief lighthouse keeper. (Chris had also previously served as a relief assistant keeper at Langara Point Lighthouse in July/August 1994, when his posted station was the Ivory Island Lighthouse.)
Manufactured by Chance Brothers of England, the first order lens, the largest of its type, (hyper-radial being the largest Chance Brothers lens) is the lens that was originally installed in the tower at Langara Point when the lighthouse was built in 1913 and is still operating there today.
As of this writing, the Langara Point Lighthouse, located on the north side of Langara Island at the north end of the Queen Charlotte Islands, is one of 51 Canadian lighthouses in British Columbia, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland that are still maintained by lighthouse keepers.
