Long Island New York’s famous 168-foot tall 1858 Fire Island Lighthouse has undergone a major exterior restoration this past summer and fall. Part of that process included installing new shotcrete over the bricks of the tower. Shotcrete is conveyed through a hose and pneumatically projected at a high velocity onto a surface and molds and then hardens onto the shape of the structure. Afterwards, the lighthouse was repainted to give it a fresh look
It is estimated that over 100,000 people a year visit the Fire Island Lighthouse and its museum exhibits, including its Fresnel lens exhibit. The lighthouse and museum is managed by the highly dedicated Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society.
