Although Maine’s Cape Neddick Lighthouse, known as Nubble Light, has always been a popular destination for tourists and is one of the most viewed and photographed lighthouses in the United States, only one car is shown in the parking lot when this photo was taken in May of 1941. At that time, the world was in turmoil, with war waging in many parts of the world. This photo may have actually been taken on the day the German Battleship Bismark sank the HMS HOOD with a loss of over 1,400 British sailors, or on the day that the British House of Commons was bombed by German aircraft. These thoughts would likely have been on the minds of the people visiting the lighthouse on that day, but little could they have imaged that by the end of the year, America would also be plunged into the World War when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7th of that year.
